The Enigma We Call Christmas

   Posted by: admin    in Uncategorized

As I have been bustling and hustling about this Christmas season, I wanted to take time to research and write a little bit about this fantastic holiday we call Christmas.  I don’t know of any other holiday that stirs up such a variety of emotions or controversy.  From the boycotts of “believers” who are appalled at stores who wish you “happy holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas” to the most annoying songs that get play time on the radio (my “most annoying” list includes:

“Last Christmas”
“Last Christmas I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year to save me from tears
I’ll give it to someone special.”
by George Michael  sung by Ashley Tisdale

and:

“Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer”
“Grandma got run over by a reindeer
walking home from our house Christmas eve
You can say there’s no such thing as Santa
but as for me and Grandpa, we believe.”

and the sorely overplayed dog barking “Jingle Bells”); to the incessant push of retailers to sell their wares in order to make their year successful; Christmas has become a “love-hate” relationship.  It is sad that more depression and suicides take place during this holiday season than at any other time of year.

What about this special time?  How did it come to be?  Did you know that Jesus never asked us to remember his birthday?  He did, however, ask that we remember His death and resurrection!

nativityThe early church didn’t observe Christmas as we know it.  In fact during the first two centuries of Christianity there was strong opposition to recognizing birthdays of martyrs or, for that matter, of Jesus. Numerous Church Fathers offered sarcastic comments about the pagan custom of celebrating birthdays when, in fact, saints and martyrs should be honoured on the days of their martyrdom—their true “birthdays,” from the church’s perspective. (ref. http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/115686/Christmas)  Most likely Jesus was born in September, not December!  The celebration of His birth in December was an effort of the Church to offset the pagan pracitice of Saturnalia or the celebration of the winter solstice.  Regardless of the date, the Church has made this a tradition, and I think it is a good one if we don’t lose the meaning of it.  We are celebrating God’s gift of a Son!  We are rejoicing in the incarnation – when God became a man and dwelt among us!

There are many parts of the celebration that have dubious origins and are linked to pagan rituals and celebrations, i.e. the Christmas tree, mistletoe, candles and garlands, and of course Santa Claus!  I don’t have the time or space to go into all of them but I would like to touch on Santa Claus just a bit.

Did you know that Santa Claus comes from the historic figure Saint Nicholas?  St. Nicholas was was born to a wealthy family in Patara, Lycia. His parents died, and he inherited a considerable sum of money, but he kept none of it. In the most famous story about his life, he threw bags of gold through the windows of three girls about to be forced into lives of prostitution. At least that’s the most common version of the story; there are others, including an excessively grim one where the three girls are beheaded by an innkeeper and pickled in a tub of brine until Nicholas resurrects them.
After a couple of miracles (he is sometimes called Nicholas the Wonder-Worker) performed while he was still a boy, Nicholas was chosen by the people of Myra to be their new bishop. (ref. http://www.christianitytoday.com/ch/news/2004/nick.html)
There are many legends tied to this generous monk that gained him notariaty and endeared him to the people.  In Germanic countries, it sometimes became hard to tell where the legend of Nicholas began and that of Woden (or Odin) ended. Somewhere along the line, probably tied to the gold-giving story, people began giving presents in his name on his feast day. When the Reformation came along, his following disappeared in all the Protestant countries except Holland, where his legend continued as Sinterklass. Martin Luther, for example, replaced this bearer of gifts with the Christ Child, or, in German, Christkindl. Over the years, that became re pronounced Kriss Kringle, and ironically is now considered another name for Santa Claus. (ref. http://www.christianitytoday.com/ch/news/2004/nick.html)

So, whatever you call him, Santa Claus, Kriss Kringle, or Saint Nicholas the “fat man” is here to stay and we can truly say, “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” and truly mean it.
As I have spent time through the years doing Christmas Pageants, children’s Chrismas Musicals, going to light shows and special decoration displays, there is one thing that stands out as truly being important: family!  After all, isn’t that why God sent His only Son to us?  He wanted a big family to share His love and creation with.  So what I want to wish for you all this Christmas is this:  Enjoy the season!  Enjoy the celebrations!  Enjoy your family while you can!  Many are separated this year because of anger, bitterness, wars, divorce, and so many other things that this old fallen world throws into our lives.  Don’t allow your present circumstaces to overshadow the true meaning of this season we are in.  “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” - John 3:16

Merry Christmas!  Have a wonderful and God Blessed New Year!

The Folly of Ruling Without God

   Posted by: admin    in Uncategorized

1 Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain?
2
The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together
against the LORDand against his Anointed One.
3
“Let us break their chains,” they say, “and throw off their fetters.”
4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.
5 Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,
6 “I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill.”
7
I will proclaim the decree of the LORD : He said to me,
“You are my Son; today I have become your Father.
8
Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance,
the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You will rule them with an iron scepter; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”
10 Therefore, you kings, be wise;be warned, you rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling.
12
Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way,
for his wrath can flare up in a moment.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.”  – Psalm 2

The world system has been in rebellion against the Sovereign God since Satan attempted to exalt himself above the Lord God and was cast out of heaven.  Rebellion, according to Scripture, is the same as witchcraft.  According to Webster’s, witchcraft is defined this way:  1 a : the use of sorcery or magic   b : communication with the devil or with a familiar spirit; 2 : an irresistible influence or fascination.  We know that it is simply a desire to control our own destiny and that of others, thus rebelling agains God’s established order and plan.

Those who are in ruling positions on this earth (who by the way were placed there by God’s authority and design-ref. Psalm 75 and Romans 13) who have not acknowledged God as Sovereign LORD, will always exalt themselves and be in rebellion to Him.  They desire to be “in control” of their own destinies and think they have the power to “change” things.  They fail to understand that apart from Jesus Christ there is no real power for change and nothing can be done of any lasting value. (Jesus’ own words; “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”John 15:5; and Isaiah records the Lord saying; “… Israel’s King and Redeemer, the LORD Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.” 44:6.  Paul explains in I Corinthians 3 that nothing lasts except what is built on the foundation of Christ.)

God is not worried, nor does He fret over these simple-minded men and women.  In fact, according to Psalm 2, He laughs at their ignorance and ineptness!  He already knows their end-game.  He will destroy all those who refuse to honor His Son – The KING of kings and LORD of lords!  But, here is the good news!  Those who acknowledge His Son and serve Him will be blessed because they have taken refuge in Him!   Amen!

“But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever,
the purposes of his heart through all generations.
Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,
the people he chose for his inheritance.”
Psalm 33:11-12
